In the world of Professional golf
Spaniard Puig Takes Australian Crown
David Puig won this week’s BMW PGA Australian Championship as he separated from the field on Sunday to win by two shots. In just his 15th DP World Tour start, the 23-year-old executed a final round 66 to end on 18-under par. The Spaniard’s maiden tour victory at Royal Queensland Golf Club comes after he recently took up full membership on the DP World Tour. He becomes the second man from Spain to win this title, after the great Seve Ballesteros, who won the event in 1981.
Runner-up was former Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion Wenyi Ding, who finished solo second at 16-under. The 21-year-old from China bypassed a Masters invite to turn professional back in October 2024, and this is his best finish on the European circuit to date.
Marc Leishman was the highest Aussie on the leaderboard in a tie for third one shot further adrift. Home favourite Min Woo Lee began the final round just one shot back but fired a mediocre two-under par to fall out of contention, but he still claimed a top five.
Puig shared the 54-hole lead with Ricardo Gouveia and Anthony Quayle, but the pair both shot over par on Sunday amid a crowded leaderboard in Brisbane. The Australian PGA marked the first of two events down under, with the Crown Australian Open taking place this week.
Royal Melbourne plays host to a field headlined by recent grand slam achiever Rory McIlroy, making his first appearance in Oceania. The winner of the tournament will earn a berth into next year’s Open Championship at Royal Birkdale and Masters (unless already exempt).
Bradley clinches Ryder Cup Revenge in Skins return
The PGA Tour-run Skins game was back on the calendar on Friday at Panther National in Florida for the first time since 2008. Keegan Bradley, Xander Schauffele, Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry navigated the open and blustery West Palm Beach track designed by Jack Nicklaus and Justin Thomas. Losing Ryder Cup frontman Bradley claimed some degree of revenge on Euro duo Lowry and Fleetwood for their part in the Bethpage upset. 39-year-old Bradley won 11 skins, nine of which were on two holes, in the alternative format to win $2.1 million.
Following the 17-year hiatus, the skins battle cultivated an element of competitiveness, but the absence of real consequence and edginess deflated the required tension to make the affair a must-watch blockbuster. It is still something for the tour to put on at the end of the year as a further entertainment product, with perhaps a contrasting quartet and a more intriguing layout in 2026.
Scheffler looking to defend Hero status in Bahamas
A minor 20-man field, complete with copious star names compete for the Hero World Challenge in the Caribbean this week. Scottie Scheffler won the event run by Tiger Woods and his foundation in 2024, and the smaller field ostensibly only elevates his chances. The $5 million purse in Albany all but bookends the PGA Tour for 2025 minus Q school and the mixed team event.
